Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise is now available for download

Update 2010-03-21: Windows XP Mode will no longer require hardware virtualization technology to run - Microsoft has released an update for Windows Virtual PC to support running on systems without hardware virtualization. This update is now available as a free Download from the Microsoft Download Center.

The RTM Version of the Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise is now available as a free Download from the Microsoft Download Center. Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 makes it easy to install and run many of your productivity programs that run on Windows XP directly from a computer that runs Windows 7. It uses virtualization technology such as Windows Virtual PC to provide a Virtual Windows XP environment for Windows 7.

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, or Windows 7 Enterprise.

Windows Virtual PC is the latest Microsoft virtualization technology. You can use it to run more than one operating system at the same time on one computer, and to run many productivity applications on a virtual Windows environment, with a single click, directly from a Windows 7 computer.

Windows Virtual PC supports the following Host and Guest Operating systems:

  • Host: Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise.
  • Guest: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) Professional, Windows Vista Enterprise Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Vista Business Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise.

Microsoft recommends that you save a copy of the Windows XP Mode installer for future, to restore the Windows XP Mode environment. For example, you could burn the installer to DVD or save it to a backup media. If the files installed by Windows XP Mode gets corrupted or deleted, you will get an error while trying to start Windows XP Mode. You can then try reinstalling the Windows XP Mode using the installer that you have saved.
